Things I Learn in History Class

shewhomustnotbenamed777:

And why I’ve decided to tell you all about them.

Flappers in 1920’s America had their own language/code, and here are my favorites.

Sweetie: a condescending term used on/towards people you hate, but now the phrase can ALSO be used as a term of endearment.

Why I’m telling you this: River’s catchphrase is “Hello, sweetie,” often in reference to the Doctor. When River first meets the Doctor (from her point of view), she hates him. After that, “sweetie” is used as a term of endearment. I’m going to file this under character development.

Handcuffs: engagement rings.

Why I’m telling you this: The Doctor always seems to wind up in handcuffs when River is around. At first, it is literal handcuffs. And then they get married. Adorable, metaphorical handcuffs.

In conclusion, River Song is a flapper from 1920’s America.
